RainWatch’s Rainwater Tank Filter System Maintenance Tips

Click to download the RainWatch Rainwater Tank Filter System Maintenance – Installation and Maintenance Guide

Cleaning Your Rain Water Tank Filter

A quick 10 minute clean is recommended with your RainWatch Filter every 3-6 months or after 40 – 70mm of rain. How dirty the filter cartridge becomes will depend on the pollution in your area. The 316 50 microns stainless steel filter cartridge can be washed clean with a garden hose. Should a quick hose down fail to clean the stainless steel filter cartridge please wash in warm water in accordance with these instructions.

The inside of the canister of the RainWatch Filter enables you to easily identify how dirty it is.

If it is time for a clean,

  • Drain the RainWatch Filer by removing the two black cleaning caps.
  • Then open the top of the canister by removing the 8 clips.
  • Remove the filter cartridge using two screwdrivers as shown in our maintenance guide (Fig 2) by gently lifting the filter plate out of the RainWatch canister.
  • Rinse down your stainless steel filter cartridge in clean water.

When complete, simply reassemble the RainWatch Filter making sure the canisters O ring is also clean.

If a rinse is insufficient, the RainWatch stainless steel filter cartridge can be washed in warm water with a mild detergent.

Rainwater Tank Maintenance

It is recommended that in order to keep a quality rainwater catchment, that you visually inspect your rainwater tank and surrounding catchment components (gutter roof water tank and pipework) every 6 months and de sludge your tank every 2-3 years.

With RainWatch as a pre-filter, the extraction of contaminants before the storage of rainwater results in a significant reduction of sediment build up in the rainwater tank. This means an exponential decrease in the amount of sludge that needs to be removed.

We estimate that with the addition of the RainWatch Filter, the cleaning period and de-sludging can be extended to once every 5-10 years (depending on how well other components are maintained, and exposure to other contaminants).
